Small Business Spotlight: Elayna Johnson

Q: When did you develop a love for painting?
EJ: I have been painting since I was about 10. My dad is also an artist and has always been a huge inspiration to me! I was also drawn to everything in art stores. This sparked my curiosity to experiment with different mediums.
Q: What materials do you use in your work? Paints, canvas, paper, etc?
EJ: I work primarily with paper and watercolor paints. I also use acrylic paint on mixed media surfaces such as leather, ceramic and acrylic goods. Think ornaments and suitcases. You can truly paint on anything with the help of google.
Q: From where do you draw your inspiration?
EJ: I love vintage florals patterns, live florals and botanicals, and vintage New Yorker covers. The illustrations were so detailed and creative. I admire people with creativity as much (if not more) than people with art skill.
Q: Playing with colors and textures excites us when designing jewelry. What excites you when painting?
EJ: I try to make colors bold and unique. I try things I think I might not like just to play around. Sometimes it turns out awful, but other times I am pleasantly surprised! I love throwing something bizarre or unique into a painting as well.
Q: Any business leaders or artists that inspire or influence you and your brand?
EJ: Quenton Blake (English illustrator) inspires me with concepts. I wish I could ask him to dinner and just hear how he came up with all of his illustrations. His creativity and ability to communicate through art is fascinating. I also love Susan Gordon Pottery -- I wish I could fill my house with her pottery.
Q: What can we look forward to seeing from your brand in the near future?
EJ: I have a few exciting collaborations launching in 2022! I am also selling my artwork as home textiles and wallpaper and am thrilled to see my artwork in people’s homes in a new way.
