Small Business Spotlight: Camilla Moss

One of the greatest privileges of running a small business is the opportunity to support other small businesses. From the time I began Hazen at the age of 9, I have encountered many people who have supported me in my work and the pursuit of my aspirations for this business. Those are the individuals who have forever influenced and shaped my life by instilling in me the courage to pursue my dreams, and oftentimes, opening the doors through which I could best pursue those dreams.

My hope for our Small Business Spotlight series is to open doors for other small business owners who are hustling daily to grow their businesses. I am confident that they believe their products bring life, creativity and joy to both themselves and their customers, and I hope we not only encourage them through this series but also nurture their success using the tools and opportunities we have graciously been given.

Humbly,
Taylor Turner

We are so excited for the next installment of our Small Business Highlight! Starting today, June 23rd, we will be including an original art piece from Camilla Moss in each online order– while supplies last!

MEET CAMILLA MOSS:

"Family and art are my passions, the latter of which did not present itself until later in life. After a career as a CPA was brought to an abrupt stop with the birth of my youngest, I picked up a paint brush and began painting as an outlet to express my love of family, faith, and friends.

I find inspiration in God’s works all around us. I love creating from scratch and working with clients to develop custom artwork that speaks to them and compliments their design and style goals. My art career began with watercolor although I enjoy exploring other mediums including acrylics. My works include custom paintings of watercolor monograms, to architecture and nature. Regardless of the medium, my end goal is always the same: to create classic, custom art that will forever be a part of a family’s home and heart.

My husband, Walker and I live in Birmingham, Alabama with our three children! I am grateful for their love and support!"

Q) When did you develop a love for painting?

I first began painting with watercolor in the late summer of 2018 after the birth of my third child. He was born with Down syndrome and other medical complications that required multiple hospital stays during his first few months. I left my job as a full time accountant to take care of him and started painting during nap times as a creative outlet. I quickly fell in love with painting and began to pursue a career in the art world!

Q: What materials do you use in your work?

Paints, canvas, paper, etc? I primarily paint in watercolor, so my primary supplies are Fabriano watercolor paper, Princeton Neptune watercolor brushes, Winsor Newton watercolor paint (I also love the Kuretake Gansi Tambi watercolor palette), water and paper towels! One of my favorite things about watercolor is the minimal supplies needed to get started!

Q: From where do you draw your inspiration?

I am inspired by my faith, nature and the coast, just to name a few! Beauty is all around us, you just have to look for it with open eyes and an open heart. During the first few months of the quarantine, I took walks with my children every morning. It was a beautiful time of year with all the plants in their spring bloom. Inspired by the spring blooms all around us, I released a collection of watercolor and acrylic floral pieces in May 2020 titled “In Bloom”.

Q: Playing with colors and textures excites us when designing jewelry. What excites you when painting?

I truly enjoy the process of painting and being able to paint on a whim. I love being inspired with new ideas and then working to bring them to life! I also love playing around with different mediums such as acrylic on canvas or on birch wood panels!

Q: Any business leaders or artists that inspire or influence you and your brand?

I am so inspired by the possibilities that are currently available to artists from creating artwork collections, prints and surface pattern design. The possibilities are really endless! I admire the artwork collections and textiles by Lulie Wallace, she is amazing!

Q: What can we look forward to seeing from your brand in the near future? One of my big goals is to create my own line of textiles that I hope to have ready in the next few months!
