Currently Coveting with Sarah Johnson

Welcome to Currently Coveting– a new, yet familiar, series highlighting artists we're currently coveting! Enjoy a complimentary signed art print by Sarah Johnson with any online purchase while supplies last!

Q: When did you develop a love for painting?
SJ: I grew up in a very artistic home - so I can't remember a day when art supplies weren't readily available! I loved painting as a hobby from early childhood to college - and then after college, I started painting professionally. I am grateful to have turned a lifelong joy into my vocation!

Q: What materials do you use in your work? Paints, canvas, paper, etc?
SJ: I use acrylic paints on canvas - but my techniques vary! I use brushes, pallet knives, interesting tools to create texture, and my hands. I have four series of artwork that all require their own techniques, even though the medium is the same.

Q: From where do you draw your inspiration?
SJ: I am always looking for creative inspiration - so I find it everywhere: nature, traveling, design books, museums, magazines, art galleries, Instagram, fashion, fabrics, and more. What catches my eye the most are interesting color combinations. I recently went crazy over a children's book I was reading my nephew because the illustrations were so unique. As a professional artist, it's so important to study not only classic interior design but stay ahead of trends and new directions in the design world.

Q: Playing with colors and textures excites us when designing jewelry. What excites you when painting?
SJ: So many things but I'll narrow it to three. 1.) I don't make a meticulous plan before I paint - so what excites me most is seeing how the painting evolves as I layer the paint. 2.) I love doing commission paintings for clients. We collaborate on the series, size, composition style, and of course colors. Knowing this will be a treasured piece in their home is such a joy. 3.) Each series of artwork has a meaningful message behind it. I get very excited knowing that my paintings are a source of inspiration and joy for people.

Q: Any business leaders or artists that inspire or influence you and your brand?
SJ: I am not just saying this because of this wonderful collaboration - but Taylor Turner!! We have been dear friends throughout our journeys as creative entrepreneurs - and Taylor has always been a huge source of encouragement and support. I have loved seeing Hazen Jewelry grow and evolve from the beginning - and I think Taylor is an example of incredible creativity mixed with business acumen. She brilliantly collaborates with incredible brands, uses her platform to lift up others and support other creative entrepreneurs, knows and serves her customers with excellence, and is a wonderful example of grace and joy amidst the craziness of growing a small business!
Q: What can we look forward to seeing from your brand in the near future?
SJ: As always, I am thrilled about new paintings coming soon. Color is coming back to interiors in a very rich, beautiful way, so I am excited to see where that takes my artwork and the different interiors my pieces will get to live. My business goals include a new online store and more exciting brand collaborations so stay tuned!
